Angelina County Salvation Army financial assistance.

The Salvation Army center in Angelina County operates several assistance programs, each of which has a different application process as well as requirements. When financial aid is needed, there will only be some support for utility bill payments, and that is limited. However the charity offers other services too, ranging from senior care to food.

Anyone that needs help and that is out of all other resources may be a potential client. The Salvation Army will also require proof of income, hardship, and they will need other supporting documentation from the applicant too. This will depend on the program that is applied too.

There are programs for addressing hunger. This are mostly met using either the food pantry, which is open Monday through Friday, or the Angelina County Salvation Army also serves a daily lunch. Both of these services depend on volunteers to pack boxes of groceries, cook and serve meals, and help in other ways. Donations from the local community, including restaurants, churches, and stores also have a key impact in how effective the pantry is.

The Lufkin Salvation Army operates the pantry for the community. This will be for low income families or those that are facing a crisis. It is open to residents of all backgrounds, including immigrants and seniors. What will be provided to clients is a free bag of groceries, and it is available once every 30 days. There may be cereal, soup, baby formula, rice, meat, and more available at the pantry.

Hunger prevention also involves serving holiday meals. These operate for the main occasions such as Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. Free meals, including Turkeys, may be provided. Children may also be given a small Christmas gift or toy, if supplies allow this.

Angelina County residents that are about to have their electricity, heat, or air conditioning service turned off may qualify for financial aid for paying utility bills. This is the only type of monetary assistance that is provided. However the Salvation Army office in Lufkin may have referrals to other resources, such as government grants from TANF, food stamp intake sites, or additional energy bill help from CEAP.

Financial help from the Salvation Army in Angelina is very limited. As noted, it is only for utilities. But what the center will do is still work with the family to find some long term solutions to their hardship. This is where the case management process comes in. It is intended to help families get back on track financially by finding employment (or a better paying job), improving budgeting skills, and much more.

A thrift store is on site too. It sells gently used items, ranging from clothes to furniture and more. The fact that the goods are sold for less money frees up a shoppers income for paying their other bills, or even rent.

This is also how some of the seasonal needs are met in the Angelina County region. Anyone that needs low cost school supplies or clothing for work, or maybe Christmas toys for a boy or girl can use the site. In some cases, the Salvation Army may also provide the client a voucher that they can use to obtain free items, such as school clothes, for their child.

Two of the other primary social services available at the center include a shelter for males only. This giver them a place to stay, a meal, and access to case management.

There is also an Adult Day Care Center for the elderly. This will give senior citizens (and their spouses) a place to go for a meal, companionship, and even information on resources such as applying for Medicare or discount medications. The Angelina County Salvation Army may also coordinate recreational activities or field trips.

The primary phone number of the Salvation Army in Angelina County is 936-634-5132. Or the location for more information is 412 South Third, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
