Allegany County Maryland assistance programs.

There are several non-profits and charity organizations to call for help in Allegany County Maryland. Receive access to free food, utility and heating bill help, rent assistance from churches, or free debt and mortgage counseling. Each agency will have its own application process and conditions that need to be met in order to receive aid.

Associated Charities of Cumberland - The two programs they offer include emergency assistance with paying utility bills, including fuel and heating oil when shut off notices have been served. In addition, the agency also offers food vouchers and groceries for area food pantries and transportation vouchers and assistance. In addition, limited clothing is available on site. Another resource is a emergency prescription program that provides emergency medication and prescriptions for immediate need, short-term prescription coverage, and the agency also provides and helps process applications for long-term prescription programs. Allegany County Salvation Army - Forms of aid offered include emergency funds for paying one time expenses are available once per year for fuel, heating bills, utilities, and rent expenses. Other programs offered include a food pantry, clothing, furniture and holiday assistance. There is aslo a seasonal Free Christmas and back to school supply drive, which is also offered in the Cumberland area. Allegany County OHEP - They run a variety of utility and energy bill programs. Receive help for paying utility bills from the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) and Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP). Second Baptist Church - This location provides emergency food, and at times baby supplies such as formula. Clients are able to visit the pantry once a month, and they also need a photo ID and proof of their current address for each and every visit.  Dial (301) 722-5190.

Allegany County Human Resources Development Commission, Inc. is the local community action agency. They provide low income, the elderly and others with assistance programs. Get help with the following.

  • Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) and Electric Universal Services Programs (EUSP) provide help with energy bills, heating oil, cooling bills, and more.
  • Other programs include homeless prevention, weatherization, senior citizen programs, counseling, and much more.

Allegany County DSS runs the government funded cash assistance program for residents with a disability. There may be grants provided to income qualified families with housing expenses, such as rent, a portion of the mortgage, security deposits, or heating or energy bills. The following churches, charities, and non-profit can provide food, vouchers, groceries, and other nutritional assistance.

  • Interfaith Food Pantry, which is based in Cumberland Maryland, provides food and vouchers up to four times per year. Dial (301) 777-7882.

Cumberland Neighborhood Services, Inc. is a volunteer organization that provides low to moderate income individuals, homeowners and families with homeownership counseling including post-purchase programs, credit and debt counseling, default and foreclosure counseling, information on mortgage programs, rehabilitation mortgage financing, painting and repair, home buyer education, and closing costs grants.
